GDPR and 24 May

Transcript of the Video

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Suzanne Dibble here, data protection law expert, coming to you raw and uncut from very hot and sweaty Singapore. Today, it hasn't really gone exactly as planned, to say the least. Just back from the night safari a little bit later than expected, got to get up early to get a flight to Thailand tomorrow, and I really haven't had the time to think about any kind of video about GDPR. However, I am going to be doing a video, which I'm doing now, and that is to ... It's not going to be entirely about GDPR. It is about GDPR, but it's not about any of the articles in GDPR.

You might have just seen ... Well, actually, with this post, of the video, today we've hit 11,000 members, which is just crazily brilliant. I meant to do it at 10,000, actually, but completely forgot, so doing it at a random number of 11,000 members in here. What I would love to do, if you are all up for it, is, I, in one of my quieter times when I'm not exercising my gray matter about a particular article of GDPR, I thought, "Wouldn't it be a great idea to all get together to celebrate our efforts in working towards compliance with GDPR?"

I almost feel like I know that some of you have really been key contributors within the group, and I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to have a party and to meet you all, and then celebrate just how awesome this group is and how brilliant you all are?" I have to say, I'm having such fun in this group, which was just the least thing from my mind when I set it up, so I thought, "Let's have a really cool party." We'll have food, and we'll have a drink. We'll have a DJ. There'll be, obviously, awesome opportunities for networking, because you're all amazing business owners in my group. We'll get the press along, because who else, quite frankly, is going to be having a GDPR party? We'll get some cool guest speakers there. We'll have some awards. I'm thinking awards for the best contributor in the group, awards for the best question, award for the best affiliate, and I'm sure we'll come up with a few more categories.

I'd love to hold it on the 24th of May, so obviously, as you know, GDPR comes into effect on the 25th, so I'd just love us all to be there at midnight. I don't know if I can actually stay up that late these days. Be there at midnight, and be celebrating our efforts in having work towards compliance by the 25th of May. What I'm also planning on doing is, this group was never about making money. It really was to help small business owners who I saw were struggling with putting things into place to comply with GDPR. What I'm going to be doing is giving a rather large check to my favorite charity, so it would be a great honor if there were people there to see me do that because it's something that ... Well, it's just, you've helped me do that, so I'd like to say thanks to you all as I hand that check, that rather large check, over.

Yeah, so I think we would have an awesome time. Maybe I'm just a little bit weird that I want to hang out with you guys and celebrate compliance towards GDPR, but let me know. Comment in the comments below. Is it a case of, "Yes, I'll be there. You can't keep me away"? Is it a case of, "I'd rather actually stay in and watch paint dry"? I don't care. Let's post extreme comments on this video, and let me know. Are you in, or are you out? Now, obviously, if nobody is interested at all, then our party will not be going ahead. I shall have a few quiet wines with my husband, and we shall toast to the success of you all, but if you do want to, then post on the comments below, and if we get enough response to it, then we'll look into throwing in a party. It would be great to get someone like the Information Commissioner along to congratulate you all on your efforts. Not to say, hopefully, I'll get my PR person onto it. Hopefully, we'll get some good press interest as well.

There'll be networking opportunities. There will be, hopefully, press interview opportunities. I'd love to line you up with a journalist who could do a case study about you. Obviously, there'll be the awards. Can't guarantee you that the prizes are going to be worth a fortune, but it'll be something reasonably good. We'll just have some fun. Let me know. Are you in? Are you out? Would you rather put hot pokers in your eye, or would you be absolutely up for that? Let me know in the comments below. I'm going to pick the best answer to that, the best-polarized answer; I'm going to randomly pick one. Well, I won't randomly pick it. It'll be the one that I think is the funniest or just tickles me in some way. I'll be giving away a copy of my pack to the person who comes up with the funniest answer.

All right. Well, that's my video for today. I'm sorry if you were hoping it was going to be serious one about GDPR for blogging, or GDPR for Etsy, which I know I still must get round to doing, but I'll do that tomorrow. My brain, I'm afraid, guys, just won't take it today, but let me know. Remember, the funniest comment gets a free copy of the pack. All right, guys. Catch you in Thailand tomorrow. Bye.
